David Metcalfe, Director & Secretary
David Metcalfe joined the Society as a Clerk on 2 August 1971, manually recording investor's and borrower's transactions via the branch ledger. In 1976, David was promoted to the role of Branch Manager, which included responsibility for the achievement of the branch performance targets. This position was held for 6 years until David was appointed as Accountant for the Society where he was responsible for the preparation and presentation of financial results within the statutory accounts and, through management information, to the Board of Directors.
In 1988, David became the Assistant General Manager Finance for the Society. Duties included responsibility for control of Society financial records including provision of the statutory accounts. Subsequently in 1991 he was appointed Assistant General Manager and Secretary and had responsibility not only for the finance function, but also Information Technology, Compliance and other departments, as well as being Secretary to the Board of Directors.
In 1993, David was promoted once again to the role that he currently holds, that of Director & Secretary of the Society. David acts in the capacity of deputy to the chief executive in this position and is the main point of contact with the Financial Services Authority. David is one of the longest serving members of staff at Darlington Building Society and is also Secretary to, and a trustee of, the Society's staff pension plan. He is also a director of all the Society's subsidiary companies.
