Originally from Northallerton, Steven began his career at Newcastle University, on the ‘Flying Start’ Accountancy Degree programme, which mixed study with working placements at PwC.
He moved to Manchester with PwC to complete his accountancy qualifications, starting in Financial Services Audit before an internal move to operational restructuring based in Leeds.
Steven, who now lives in Stokesley, says: “It was an interesting job, and fantastic experience, but when I saw that DBS was recruiting, it gave me a chance to come back to the North-East.”
As Head of Finance, Steven is responsible for both the Finance and the Treasury departments, and joined the Society in 2018 as Financial Reporting Manager.
His role is very varied and includes responsibility for the day-to-day running of the finances, as well as all the financial reporting that comes out of the business.
“Much of the regulation that applies to the banks and building societies apply to all institutions, regardless of the size of the business,” he explains. “so there is a lot of regulatory reporting to be done. Because it’s a small organisation, I get involved in a lot of different areas of the business. Although I, and my team, are not customer-facing, what we do has an impact on our customers.”
Having worked with building societies previously, Steven knew how the mutual sector operated, and is pleased to be part of Darlington Building Society.
“People are what make the business,” he says, “and DBS is like a family. I like that it’s a very supportive organisation, as well as ambitious.”
