Making a transfer

What is a nominated bank account?

A nominated bank account is a non-Darlington Building Society bank account you wish to be able to transfer money into from your Darlington Building Society savings account.

Why don’t I have a transfer option next to my account?

Accounts will only have a transfer option if transfers are allowed on that account via the Darlingtonline system.

Can a nominated bank account be in someone else’s name?

No, the nominated bank account must be in the same name as the Darlington Building Society savings account you are transferring money from.

Setting up a nominated bank account

To transfer money out of your account, you need to register a UK bank account to transfer money into. This bank account is called a nominated bank account.

The nominated bank account must be in the same name as the Darlington Building Society savings account you are transferring money from. Transfers to a joint account are allowed if the registered Darlingtonline user is named on the account.

Step 1) Choose ‘Your bank account’ from the menu.

Step 2) Enter your bank details.

Step 3) We will send you a mandate form in the post. Please sign and return it to us (may take up to 5 working days).

Step 4) You can make transactions as soon as you get a notification to say your nominated bank account details have been approved.

You can change your nominated bank account details at any time: Log in to Darlingtonline and on the menu bar, click your bank account. Click on the ‘Delete’ button and then ‘Add new bank details’ and click ‘Submit’. We will then send you a new mandate form to sign and return to us. You won’t be able to make a transaction for five days after we have received your signed mandate form.

Make a transfer to a nominated bank account

To transfer money to a nominated bank account you will need to set a nominated bank account on the ‘Your bank account’ page.

Step 1) Click ‘Transfer’ next to the account you want to transfer from.

Step 2) Select what you would like to do:

  • Transfer to your nominated bank account
  • Transfer to another of your society accounts
  • Transfer to someone else’s Darlington Building Society account

Step 3) Enter the reference (if relevant), account details (as required) and amount to be transferred (between £10 and £25,000).

Step 4) Enter your password or complete Secure Customer Authentication to submit your transfer.

How much money can I transfer?

The minimum transfer limit is £10, and the maximum limit is £25,000. If you would like to make a withdrawal above these limits, please message the Online Support Team using the secure message facility. We will send you a cheque for withdrawals above £25,000.

Can I transfer money on a date in the future?

Yes. The date defaults to today’s date. You can change this to a future date if you need to. If your transfer request is from an account where you need to give us several days’ notice to make a withdrawal, then the date will automatically default to include the notice period, but you can change this. If a penalty charge is applicable, this will be calculated automatically.

How long will my request take?

Requests will not show immediately on your account. Your account details and transactions are updated regularly throughout the day at approximately 9am, 12pm and 4pm. We may sometimes need some further information from you to carry out your request. If this is the case, we will contact you by telephone or secure message.

Transfer requests received by 3pm on a working day will be actioned on the same day. Transfer requests received after 3pm will be actioned on the next working day. A working day means Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and excludes bank holidays. We cannot guarantee when a payment will reach the account.

You can contact our Online Support Team through the secure messaging service whilst you are signed into Darlingtonline. The team can also send you a secure message in relation to your accounts.

Our messaging system is secure, and you can feel safe in the knowledge that:

  • No details of the message will ever be sent in the email notification;

Closing your account

How do I close my account?

You can use Darlingtonline to close your eligible accounts.

If your closure balance is over £25,000, you can request to close it using Darlingtonline, and we will send you a cheque in the post. We can’t make a transfer to either a bank account or another Darlington Building Society account if the closure balance is over £25,000.

Step 1) Click ‘Details’ next to the account to be closed.

Step 2) Click ‘Close account’ option.

Step 3) Choose how you would like to close the account:

  • By cheque;

Step 4) Enter your password and click ‘Confirm’.

Can I close the account by cheque and have the cheque made payable to someone else?

No, cheques are only made payable to the account holder (s) and to the address we hold in our records.

Can I close the account and have the balance transferred to an account that isn’t my nominated bank account?

No, you can only transfer the closure balance to another available Darlington Building Society account or your nominated bank account only.

Security

Is Darlingtonline secure?

For someone to gain access to your account details, they would need your user ID, password, and piece of memorable information. You should keep these secure by not writing them down or storing them on your personal computer. Keep them secret and never share these details with anybody else. We will only ever ask you for this information as part of the login process.

We recommend that you change your password and piece of memorable information on a regular basis. You can do this within Darlingtonline using the ‘Security details’ option in your user profile.      You must use a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and at least one special character within both your password and piece of memorable information. Avoid using words that may be easy for others to guess, such as the name of a family member or your birthday. All information transmitted between your personal computer and the Darlingtonline server is encrypted.

When will I be asked to use two-factor authentication?

You will need to set up two-factor authentication the first time you log into Darlingtonline. We will ask you for a phone number, which we will send either a text message or a phone call with a one-time authentication code. We will use Two Factor identification every time you want to add or change a nominated bank account, transact to another individual’s Darlington Building Society account, or log into Darlingtonline after a break of 90 or more days.

What is Secure Customer Authentication (SCA)?

Strong Customer Authentication (or SCA) is a new process designed to reduce fraud and make your Darlingtonline account more secure. It gives a two-step process by using a one-time code via text or phone call, as well as your password and memorable information, to log in and make changes to your account. This helps us ensure you are legitimately accessing your own account, increasing security for the system and your account.

What can I do to help keep my information secure?

You should check that you have current anti-virus/spyware software and a personal firewall installed. You should also use the most up-to-date version of your browser. Treat any emails or phone calls requesting personal financial information with extreme caution; we will never ask you to reveal your password or memorable information, other than as part of the login process.
