A donation that goes beyond comfort

Thirty-two families will have heating and hot water throughout winter thanks to a £9,676 donation from our 5% Pledge.

The 700 Club is a charity which provides temporary accommodation and support services to vulnerable people. Their services particularly help those who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless or in hardship or distress.

After the heating system failed, the charity was approaching the colder months with only one boiler out of three working, leaving 32 families at risk of having no heating or hot water.

Acting quickly, the 700 Club applied to our 5% Pledge and was awarded £9,676 to pay for two new boilers. The boilers will heat 32 self-contained flats, which offer a stepping stone into permanent and long-term housing.

Head of Strategy and Development for the 700 Club, Dr John Elliston MBE said: “We are delighted to receive the donation from Darlington Building Society. It demonstrates the commitment of the Society to the people of Darlington.”

“People cannot progress in their lives without a safe, secure, home, and warmth and hot water make a massive contribution to this. Where children are involved, it is even more important.”

“A warm home is both welcoming and motivating. It encourages residents to fully engage with the project aims and provides a comfortable space in which to build the social networks that are crucial to living independently.”

“We are told the lifespan of the boilers will be 10 to 15 years, so the donation will benefit residents for many years to come.”

Chris Hunter, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, serves as Treasurer on the Board of the 700 Club. He said: “We are delighted to be able to support with our 5% Pledge and this is another example of how we can make a real difference to our local communities and helping them keep warm over winter”
