Stroke patients in the North-East will be helped with their rehabilitation thanks to the members of Darlington Building Society.

The County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust’s charity was presented with £2,334 following the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The Society pledged to donate 50p for every postal vote cast at the meeting, while every online vote raised £1. A total of 3,554 members voted and staff drew up a shortlist of four good causes to receive the money, with members overwhelmingly choosing the NHS charity.

The charity’s manager, Pat Chambers, explained that the money would be used to buy equipment used in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, including rehabilitation sensory boards.

The boards are designed to help patients redevelop their motor skills for day-to-day activities such as dealing with laces, buttons and zips.

“It’s such an important part of rehabilitation and the boards help patients to practise those skills that most of us take for granted.

“We are honoured and thrilled to be chosen by the members of Darlington Building Society to receive this donation that will make a real difference to those being cared for following strokes.

“The support we receive from Darlington Building Society is overwhelming and we can’t thank the members and staff enough.”

Darlington Building Society annually donates 5% of its profits to good causes, with each branch, along with head office, supporting five local community organisations in a ‘Local 5’ initiative. The NHS charity is one of the ‘Local 5’ chosen by head office staff.

Trish Brown, a head office representative on the Society’s Community Impact Group, said: “We all have reason to be grateful to our heroic NHS staff, especially during the past few years of the pandemic, so this was a very popular choice.

“Knowing that the money would be used to support the rehabilitation of stroke patients really touched the hearts of staff and members, so we are delighted to be able to make the donation to such a wonderful cause.”
