ENGINEER Matthew Hayes is a young man going places – and Darlington Building Society has supported him at every stage of his life.

It all started when Matthew’s mum, Lynne, opened a junior account for him at our Middlesbrough branch when he became a teenager.

Matthew, who grew up in Ingleby Barwick, is a keen sportsman and remembers using the account to save up for golfing holidays with friends when he was growing up.

“It was my first real experience of saving and I loved the fact that I could put money in the account and use it towards things like the golfing breaks,” he says.

The next stage of Matthew’s journey with Darlington Building Society was to open a ‘Help To Buy ISA’, aimed at helping him save towards taking his first step on the property ladder.

During that time, Matthew was building a promising career as a Project Engineer and his savings enabled him to purchase his first car – a BMW 3 Series – three years ago.

And now the dream of owning his own home has become a reality thanks to Darlington Building Society approving him for a Young Professionals Mortgage when other lenders turned him down.

“I honestly wouldn’t have been able to buy the house I wanted if it hadn’t been for the flexibility shown by Darlington Building Society,” says Matthew.

While the computers at other financial institutions said “no”, Darlington Building Society was able to show much more flexibility through its Young Professionals Mortgage, taking into account not just his basic salary but his qualifications, bonus payments, and career prospects as a highly regarded young engineer.

“I’d reached the conclusion that it wasn’t going to happen for me because other lenders just wouldn’t give me the money, but I tried Darlington Building Society and they bent over backwards to get me what I needed.

“I’d just passed my Masters Degree in engineering at Northumbria University, and they took that into account, along with my likely progression with my employer. They were 100 per cent more flexible than anyone else and I’ll always be grateful.”

The result is that Matthew has now moved in to a three-bedroom semi-detached house at Wynyard, and he is looking forward to travelling the world in his role, knowing he has a dream home to come back to.

“Right from being young, I’ve loved the friendliness of the staff at Darlington Building Society’s Middlesbrough branch. Of course, digital banking has its place, but I still like that personal touch and being able to go in and get the right advice from people you trust,” he says.

Proud mum Lynne adds: “Darlington Building Society has been absolutely brilliant all the way through – so friendly and supportive. They even make you a nice cup of tea!”
