Yarm Wellness Centre applied to the Darlington Building Society 5% Pledge and received £500 to help with renovation costs.

Cheryl Scollay’s holistic hub will fight back against the ongoing consequences of the pandemic, including isolation, mental health struggles and job losses.

Renovating to rebuild futures

The donation from the Society will be used towards renovations at the two-hundred-year-old former schoolhouse.

Cheryl, Chair of Yarm Wellness, said: “Once Yarm Wellness Centre is up and running, one of our priorities is to add a Man Shed. We’re very grateful to Darlington Building Society for financing the restoration.”

Cheryl also hopes to add a sensory garden, and an outdoor gym built from shipping containers. This will be made available free-of-charge for anyone who has lost their job.

5% Pledge

The donation was part of Darlington Building Society’s 5% Pledge, where 5% of its profits are donated to local causes.

Yarm Wellness Centre also recently became a Local 5 partner of Darlington Building Society, through its Yarm branch.

Kathryn Leighton, supervisor of Darlington Building Society’s Yarm branch, said: “This is exactly the sort of project that we want to support. We are happy to help in any way we can to support our local communities. Not just by donating money, but also by having conversations with our customers and connecting them to these services.

“Darlington Building Society wants staff out engaging with the community, not sat behind a desk. It’s all about looking after one another.”
