Darlington Building Society is the best building society in the UK to work for, Best Companies Q4 results reveal.

The independent employee engagement survey is completed by employees in different sectors across the national workforce. Businesses are benchmarked in various categories to identify which ones have the most engaged employees.

When people are engaged they feel connected to each other, and to the aims of the organisation they work for. They believe in a shared purpose and play an important part in fulfilling it.

Key findings from the Q4 2023 survey reveal that, as well as retaining its two-star ‘Outstanding’ accreditation for the fourth consecutive year, Darlington Building Society is the:

  • #1 building society to work for nationally
  • #3 best regional financial service to work for
  • #41 best mid-sized company to work for in the UK

In addition, the departments within the Society also triumphed:

  • Half of the Society’s departments achieved three-star accreditation, also categorised as ‘World Class’
  • A further 27% of departments gained a two-star ‘Outstanding’ accreditation

Helen Easton, Director of People and Culture at Darlington Building Society said:

“What a fantastic achievement, to be recognised for a fourth year running as an outstanding place to work. It truly is testament to the dedication of all our colleagues, and the shared belief that we are all working towards making the Society the best place for each other and our members. Best Companies means a lot to us as an employer because it is an independent and nationally recognised institution. Never ones to rest on our laurels, we will be entering the New Year with lots of ideas and feedback from the survey and from our Colleague Council to put into action, so that our colleagues continue to feel heard and fulfilled at work.”

Recently the Society also announced an inflation-busting pay rise for all employees and remain committed to being a Living Wage Foundation Employer. It also doubled down on its commitment to supporting mental wellbeing by maintaining its “MyDay”. This is an additional rest day which enables employees to take time off in addition to their annual leave allowance, to relax away from work and spend however they like.
