Lisa served as an Operator Maintainer (Communications) in the Royal Navy

On Darlington Building Society being a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, Lisa says:

“I think it’s great that Darlington Building Society is a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant. Helping savers, borrowers, employees and those in the local community with military backgrounds is crucial. In my day you didn’t get any formal qualifications to prove what you did in service, which made it difficult to find a role at a similar level, or a role that utilises the skills gained. Darlington Building Society understands the life experience gained and the potential of transferable skills, helping people who leave the Forces and supporting them in a new career.”

On key transferrable skills gained in the Forces, Lisa says:
“I’ve used many key transferrable skills from the military, particularly having keen attention to detail, a strong work ethic, team building and teamwork, communication skills, organisation, and time management. These are all the requirements of a good sailor that are also the requirements of a building society employee in any role. I also think travelling the world gives you a broader understanding of different cultures and ways of life which is a great benefit when working with people.”

We are committed to supporting military personnel past and present, whether they’re colleagues, members or in our local communities. You can learn more on our Armed Services Covenant page.
