At Darlington Building Society we believe that work experience is an important part of a young person’s development. It helps to prepare them for the world of work, building confidence and influencing career choices.
We offer two work experience programmes which are tailored to suit students at different stages in their education. Our World of Work placement allows GCSE students to work across a number of departments and gain an insight into the functions that make up the Society.
The second placement is Transition to Work, which is aimed at sixth form students and combines a self-study element, where students work on a brief and share their findings with our staff, together with experience of shadowing key members of the Society.
On both placements, we offer support and guidance with CV writing, presentation skills and interview preparation to help students progress into the world of work.
We’re keen to develop and deliver a meaningful work experience programme as it provides several benefits to young people and employers in the area. We have built great relationships with schools and colleges in the local community and provided development and mentoring opportunities to our staff through our programmes.
People Development Specialist, Lauren Hiles says: “At Darlington Building Society we are proud to play an important role in helping the community. We want to make a difference by sharing our time and knowledge supporting students in our local area.
“We recognise the importance of allowing students to see the career and educational pathways that are available to them and to experience working in a busy financial institution.”
Further to this, the great thing about work experience at the Society is that all our services and business support functions are located centrally, which allows students to gain knowledge of working in a broad range of areas.
We have even employed students following successful work experience placements with us. Chris Heron, a student at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College who is currently employed in our Direct Sales department, completed a one-week Transition to Work placement with us and said: “The experience has opened my eyes to different areas of work and given me an insight into working in a 9-5 office job.”
To join us for a one-week placement, simply contact email@example.com. As part of the process we ask students to complete an application form and provide us with a reference from your school or college. We welcome applications from all students.
