28th April 2021
MEMBERS of Darlington Building Society have given a local hospice a surprise boost by casting their votes at this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
As part of its AGM each year, the Society donates to charity for every vote cast. This year, 3,920 members voted, with every postal vote generating a 50p donation, and every online vote raising £1.
The Society annually donates five per cent of its profits to good causes in local communities, and five charities were chosen by the members of Society’s ‘Community Impact Group’ to go onto the AGM Proxy Voting Form. Members voted in favour of Teesside Hospice and that charity will now receive £2,522 as a result.
This year’s AGM was held virtually on 26 April 2021, with a quorum of members from the Society’s staff present at their Head Office, social distanced from each other. In a change to last year’s meeting, this year members were able to join virtually from home and ask their questions of the Board on the night.
Members were also able to submit questions to the Board and vote by post and online for all the resolutions. At the AGM, after a round up of the society’s performance in 2020, David Bews, the Company Secretary read out the results cast ahead of the meeting, demonstrating voting members overwhelming backing the Society, with all resolutions passed.
Darlington Building Society Chief Executive Andrew Craddock said: “Thanks to so many of our members casting their AGM votes in support of the Society and the approach we are taking on behalf of our members.
“We place great importance in giving our members a voice and we appreciate how important our charity work is to those members. We believe that by creating a link between our members votes in this way, is a great way to wrap up 2020 as the year of ‘Making a Difference’.
“Plus a great cause, such as Teesside Hospice is able to further invest in their much needed work.”
Debbie Coulson, Director of Income Generation said: “We are very excited to have been chosen by Darlington Building Society’s members in this way.
“By voting for us, Society members are improving the quality of life for local people with terminal illnesses. Each year thousands of local people and their families need our help to make the most of every day, to ensure they receive the best possible care and to create experiences and memories that last a lifetime. This donation will take us closer to reaching everyone who needs our support. Thank you.”
