I have two direct reports, to read more about each of them and their role here at the Society, check out the links below:
SARAH Horley is a shining example of how Darlington Building Society believes in growing its own talent.
Sarah was born in York but has lived in Darlington since she was eight and started her career on a Youth Training Scheme with the borough council, working in the rates department.
She joined Darlington Building Society 25 years ago as an internal auditor and showed enough potential to be placed on a management training programme. That led to her first management position as an Assistant Mortgage Manager before she progressed through a range of senior roles.
She rose to the position of Director of Service Excellence and, in December 2020, was made the Society’s first Credit Director.
Sarah’s role involves managing the process around mortgage applications: reviewing them, assessing the financial risk; and making decisions on whether they can be approved.
Sarah also manages the Financial Support Team, which helps members to avoid financial problems, but supporting them if difficulties arise.
She also has a responsibility for the day-to-day administration of existing commercial mortgages, and the Society’s subsidiary, Darlington Homes.
Sarah says she loves working for Darlington Building Society because it is such an understanding employer.
“The Society is very good at being adaptable and flexible in the interests of the business, but the same applies in the care of its employees too,” she says.
“It’s always supported me throughout my career and helped me grow at different stages of my life, such as when I became a mum, and that’s really important to me.”
