As Chief Financial Officer, Steven has a key strategic role on the board of Darlington Building Society, with a broad overview of the organisation.
Steven was raised in Swainby, North Yorkshire. His father was as a recruitment consultant, while his mother had jobs in retail, and Steven is proud to be working for a local Society that is embedded in the area where he grew up.
He laid the foundations for his career at Newcastle University, by embarking on the ‘Flying Start’ Accountancy Degree programme, which mixed study with work placements at PwC.
He moved to Manchester with PwC to complete his accountancy qualifications, starting in Financial Services Audit, before an internal move to operational restructuring based in Leeds.
Steven says: “It was an interesting job, and fantastic experience, but when I saw that DBS was recruiting, it gave me a chance to come back to the North-East.”
He joined the Society as Financial Reporting Manager in 2018 and was promoted to Financial Controller later that year, with his role expanding to take on responsibility for Treasury, and greater involvement in balance sheet planning.
Steven’s rise up the ranks has continued, with promotion to Chief Financial Officer from September 2022, elevating him to board level and his first executive role. He now has a wide-ranging remit, with an input into all aspects of the business, including strategic decisions affecting staff, branches, and products.
“I’m very fortunate to have had invaluable support from the team here, enabling me to develop new skills in different areas of the business. I’ve learned a lot and I’m very appreciative of the confidence that’s been shown in me,” says Steven.
“I always thought I would end up in industry, but it’s been such an interesting and rewarding journey with Darlington Building Society, and I feel privileged that I’ve been given these opportunities at what has always been my local building society.”
“When I got married in 2016, the wedding was paid for with a Darlington Building Society Special Occasion Saver account that had been opened by my mother-in-law,” he smiles.
He and his wife, Alex, now have two daughters, Amber and Niamh, and the family are happily settled in Stokesley as he embarks on the latest stage of his career.
“I love working for an organisation that’s really ambitious, with an executive team and board that is sully focused on how they can benefit members as much as possible. Members are at the core of everything we do, and I really value that.
“When you add into the mix the widespread difference the Society makes through its annual pledge to donate 5% of its profits to good causes, along with being a caring employer that encourages staff to volunteer out in the community, it’s makes it such a great place to work.”
